In my early years as a graphic designer, printing was a major challenge for me. In those days, I would either just get paid for designing, and reject print jobs (since I knew little or nothing about it), or I would sub-contract the printing aspect to someone in Shomolu.
I soon realised that the print guy actually made more money than myself, who spent sleepless nights designing the job, and so, greed pushed me into taking the risk. On getting to the press, I was confronted with different confusing comments and questions like “Do you want it as spot or separation?”, “What machine do you want it to run on?”, “Do you want it laid as print and turn or print and tumble?”, etc. One of the guys there realised I was a complete novice and quickly took advantage of me in the guise of helping out. Your guess is as good as mine — I ran at a complete loss.
Due to the usual ‘drama’ at the press or fear of losing a client, I most of the time, over-billed or under-billed clients for jobs. This brought more trouble, as I ran into debts ranging from N12,000 to N150,000 and more, and of course, I lost meaningful clients in the process.
Today, the above episode is history, but it came at a huge cost. You don’t have to go through this same cycle.
Whether you are a professional designer or a beginner, if you are currently finding it difficult to grapple with print issues, do not hesitate to take advantage of this opportunity to gain mastery of Pre-Press Management.
