our story

A couple of years ago, we observed a significant growth in the country’s creative and tech industries. Most of the early players at the time were self-taught due to the scarcity of creative/tech schools or the high cost of acquiring these skills. Over the years, as the creative/tech industry grew, a number of learning institutions (a bit more affordable than the previous ones) also sprang up, affording some not-so-broke individuals the opportunity to acquire these skills. It was a welcome development, due to the fact that it helped most gain mastery of the use of software applications used by their Western counterparts.

THE CHALLENGES
The challenge with these institutions, however, was that while some of the participants of their short-focused courses (mostly one month), were able to create aesthetically appealing designs, as well as create Photoshop effects, etc., they almost always failed to communicate properly with their designs due to their little or no understanding of the fundamentals of graphic design. Most of them had little or no knowledge of what the principles or elements of design are; do not understand creative briefs; could not analyse a client’s business and proffer creative solutions beyond designing, amongst other things. This, we realised, was inherited from their tutors who were self-taught in the first place (and didn’t bother to improve themselves beyond the use of software applications afterwards). Aside from the above challenge, we also noticed an obvious disconnect between the school and the participants after completion of their programmes. A typical example is the non-existence of an alumni forum (maybe online) where the student, amongst other issues, could ask questions, and receive answers, for industry-related challenges when he finally gets into the labour market. The third challenge is tech-related. It has to do with some tech schools with big names that do not deliver on quality training. While the inclusion of the school’s name in an applicant’s CV might attract an employer to invite the candidate for an interview, the performance of the individual will definitely leave the business owner or manager disappointed.

OUR SOLUTION
Having observed the above challenges over the years, we thought it was time to disrupt things a little bit. So, we studied hard, practiced even harder, gained experience, built networks, understudied existing outfits within and outside the country, strategised and came up with an institution that:
I.) Will not just teach it’s participants the use of software applications, but will also teach on the fundamentals of the course in one session;
II.) Will serve it’s participants high quality design/tech training at an affordable fee;
III.) Will always train everyday of it’s existence like it was the first day;
IV.) Will endeavour to help it’s participants gain industry experience through our connections and relationship with our partners;
V.) Will be in the lives of our participants throughout life (an alumni association), starting with BrandSpective, our online forum;
VI.) Will eventually grow into a tertiary institution of art and information technology;
VII.) Will always grow with current trend and will improve/adjust when necessary.

THE FUTURE WE SEE
As 'possibilitarians', we believe that success lies within reach of those who reach beyond themselves. We see Africa reigning supreme in the creative and tech world in the nearest future if she stretches herself, as well as learn to take advantage of opportunities like the one Cr8ive Xpats Academy presents.
